Pt. 2 Flutie Flakes...Pedroia Poppers.
The folks who created Flutie Flakes cereal hope to score again with another product named for an undersized, overachieving Boston athlete.
Pedroia Black Bean and Corn Salsa rolls into local markets such as Stop & Shop and Shaw’s in the next few weeks. It’s named for Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and features his likeness on the label.
“New England has always been a tremendous market for us,” said Ty Ballou of PLB Sports, a Pittsburgh company that markets athlete-themed food products. Flutie Flakes, named for Natick gridiron great Doug Flutie, was his most successful product. It sold 3 million boxes, and he says Greater Boston was responsible for a large percentage of the sales.
Ballou says he sees a lot of Flutie in Pedroia.
“Dustin embodies New England,” he said. “He’s a hard-nosed hustling player who fans love.”
Pedroia Black Bean and Corn Salsa will come in both mild and medium-spicy versions. Clearly, the extra hot is reserved for Jacoby.
