25 Cuban migrants dropped off at a Waffle House
As late-night patrons of the Waffle House in Oakland Park dined on sunny-side-up eggs and crispy bacon, 24 Cuban migrants were picked up by Border Patrol officials in the parking lot late Monday night.
The migrants had been smuggled into the United States earlier in the day and were taken to the restaurant, at 4840 NW Ninth Ave.
The group -- 10 adult men, nine adult women, two girls and three boys -- were released Tuesday afternoon after they were processed at the U.S. Border Patrol in Pembroke Pines.
They were issued a notice to appear in front of an immigration judge and released on their own recognizance, said Victor Colon, an assistant chief Border Patrol agent.
They were then taken to a medical facility in Miami.
''They came in a go-fast boat. This one was apparently white with dual outboard engines,'' Colon said. ``The boat is commonly used in this type of smuggling venture.
``The trip starts in the United States, goes to Cuba and then returns the people to the United States.''
Authorities know that the group departed Cuba on Thursday, but they are still investigating where they came ashore, Colon said.
An unidentified truck driver picked up the migrants when they reached the United States and then dropped them off at the 24-hour restaurant, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.
Under the ''wet foot/dry foot'' policy, Cuban migrants who reach U.S. soil -- of which there were at least 3,076 in fiscal year 2006 -- are permitted to stay in the United States. The Cuban Adjustment Act of 1966 enables them to apply for a green card once they pass the 12-month mark in the country.
Those who are interdicted at sea are usually taken back to Cuba unless they can convince asylum officers that they fear returning to their homeland. Those migrants are sent to Guantánamo Bay.
Now tell me, why in the world do we let the cubans stay but we push the mexicans out?
It makes no sense.
